13 Moons and Shared Wisdom at Walmer Legacy Space

News & Stories

Thirteen moons now line the seating at the Walmer Legacy Space—each one hand-painted by Indigenous artist Lindsey Lickers. These beautiful works represent the thirteen moons of the traditional Indigenous lunar calendar, honouring the cycles of life, nature, and renewal. Each moon reflects a specific time in the calendar—from the first frost, to the return of the bears from hibernation, to the blooming of the trilliums, one of the first spring flowers.

The moons are a natural complement to the existing mural on the church doors by Métis artist Dani Kastelein, which depicts the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.

Beading Workshop, Storytelling & Indigenous Knowledge Sharing

Alongside the moon installation, we hosted Beads & Wisdom: Learning the 13 Moons Through Indigenous Art—a beading workshop led by Lindsey that welcomed thirty participants from the surrounding community. For many, it was their first experience with beadwork, an art form that holds deep cultural significance in Indigenous communities. These gatherings became more than creative workshops—they were spaces for storytelling, connection, and learning from Indigenous knowledge keepers.

Lindsey guided participants in creating moon pins, teaching both the fundamentals of beadwork and the cultural teachings of the 13 Moons. Alongside the beadwork, participants gained insight into Indigenous worldviews and the stories that shape them.

Taking Reconciliation Action Through our Projects

The moon installation and the beading workshop are examples of how we are bringing TAS’s Reconciliation Action Plan to life—partnering with Indigenous artists and organizations to foster learning, cultural exchange, and community connection.

Thank you to Lindsey for sharing her art and knowledge, and to everyone who joined us in this meaningful process. Together, we created more than pins and paintings—we created space for reflection, learning, and connection.
